Best Management Practices (BMP)
What are Best Management Practices
Best Management Practices (BMP) are guidelines that help industry act as environmental stewards completing projects on land or water in ways that mitigate negative resource, environmental and social impacts as much as possible and meet necessary legislative requirements.
As example, legislation might dictate that projects cannot cause harm to a watercourse, while BMPs provide practical methods to avoid harming a watercourse.
BMPs can also be used as an effective tool and guide for government Subject Matter Experts (SME) in both evaluating Early Mineral Exploration project proposals and conducting site inspections.
To the greatest extent possible, BMPs are:
- based on scientific evidence;
- practical;
- to consider local traditional knowledge
- applicable in a variety of conditions;
- supported by technical terms and definitions;
- based on common industry practices and standards;
- consistent with government policies, and applicable regulations; and
- provide flexibility as appropriate.
Industry stakeholders and Indigenous rightsholders in Manitoba are encouraged to provide feedback on these guidelines to support ongoing enhancement and increased value. Comments can be sent to:
